Original German term: Ätherleib
Plain English
The etheric body is Steiner’s term for the life-forming and organising side of a living being.
Modern Translation
It points to growth, vitality, rhythm, regeneration, form, habit, and the living coherence of an organism.
Why It Matters
The idea is important in Waldorf education, anthroposophic medicine, biodynamics, and spiritual anthropology. It is one of the main ways anthroposophy distinguishes the living from the merely physical.
For Beginners
A useful first image is a plant. The material substance of a plant changes constantly, yet the plant keeps a recognisable form and life pattern. Anthroposophy calls this organising life activity etheric.
Important Context
The term etheric body comes from an older spiritual vocabulary. Most modern anthroposophists do not think of it as a measurable substance, but as a way of describing life, growth, organisation, rhythm, and vitality.
